The role profile is for the post of bicycle mechanic & customer support within Shand Cycles workshop in Livingston, reporting to the manufacturing operations manager. Shand Cycles are a designer and builder of hand crafted, bespoke, high end bicycles, with a customer base all over the world. An increase in orders and growth of the business, has resulted in this interesting opportunity to join our team.

Job purpose

To support the assembly & road testing of bicycles, to produce high quality products for Shand customers. Provide advice & technical support to customers over telephone, in person & email.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Assemble bicycles & framesets to a very high standard-with both standard derailleur gears or Rohloff internal gear hub & carbon belt drive
  • Hand building of wheels, which may contain a dynamo or internal gear hub
  • Carry out road testing of completed bikes
  • Carry out adjustments to ensure optimal setup of bikes for customers
  • Carry out final quality control on finished bike to ensure it is of the highest standard
  • Engage with customers via email and telephone, to discuss technical aspects & queries regarding new bike purchases and provide guidance as to the most appropriate bike for their needs
  • Maintain stores area in a clean & orderly fashion and ensure incoming stock is correctly allocated to parts bins and booked onto the stock system
  • Maintain a clean and tidy work area, ensuring adherence to health & safety regulations
  • Monitor stock levels of consumables, place orders directly with suppliers
  • Manage time to efficiently build bicycles to priorities set by management
  • Identify areas where workshop processes can be improved or made more efficient
  • As we are a small team, there will be opportunities to support other areas of the business to maintain the flow of bikes through the system eg media blast of frames prior to paint, raw tube preparation, QC inspection, so this may provide an interesting opportunity to learn more about the art of bicycle frame building and design.

Key relationships (internal and external)

  • Work with management team to complete work to agreed specification
  • Maintain close working relationship with fabrication & paint team, and quickly feed-back any issues which may impact the quality of finished frames
  • Manage relationships with customers to ensure queries are dealt with quickly

Key outputs

  • Fully assembled bikes for shipping to or collection by customers
  • Technical support for customers

Skills / knowledge

  • Cytech mechanic qualification is desired
  • Previous experience as bike mechanic
  • Health & safety awareness in a workshop environment
  • Basic knowledge of bicycle frame construction
  • Good communication and team working skills
  • Friendly and approachable
  • Good problem solving and technical ability
  • Positive proactive attitude and self-starter

Salary: £competitive based on experience
